I examined the pipe leading up the brick wall and thought about just exactly how many screws were holding it up. A quick and sharp turn of my head was unavoidable, but to my surprise what it was that had startled me was far less than harmless. I palmed the back of my neck with the slightest air of discomfort and could feel that my palm was clammy. Seeing this face was slightly disarming while also empowering and it gave me a joy that couldn't be compared to anything other than what one would expect to feel at their third birthday party, presuming one could remember it. I think you understand.
"Louis, is that you?" she asked with an investigative tone.
I heard only footsteps but no response otherwise. It was easy to tell that someone would be rounding the corner soon. There was but only one other door out of the room and it was locked from the opposite side. I cursed myself inside because I knew that this was definitely going to cause me to accumulate a minor fine on past due library books until I could find a way around it.
